Red Wolves offer Thomas

Fort Smith Northside cornerback Kiondre Thomas (Class of 16) made his first visit to Arkansas State on Friday for the spring game. On Tuesday he picked up an offer from the Red Wolves.

Data: Thomas is 6-foot, 170 pounder who played cornerback and running back/receiver for the Grizzlies, who finished 9-3. He finished the season with 6 interceptions, including 3 in a victory over eventual Class 6A champion Pine Bluff. He also had a 99-yard kickoff return vs. eventually Class 7A champion Bentonville. In all he accounted for 8 touchdowns, including 2 in a playoff victory over Little Rock Catholic. He is also one of the top sprinters in the state, finishing 5th in the 100 meters at the 7A meet.

“I’m very athletic and I like to use my speed,’’ he said. “I’m also real aggressive and that is the way you have to be to play cornerback. I just do what my coaches tell me to do and go out and make plays.”

Offers: Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, Eastern Illinois. He said he is receiving regular contact from Vanderbilt, Memphis, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Indiana and Purdue.

Summer plans: “I will probably attend camps at Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State. And I will probably go back to Jonesboro again.”

On Arkansas State: “I did not expect it to be like that. I was a lot nicer than I thought it would be. I figured it would be nice, but it exceeded my expectations. And with all of the new facilities that will be built in the next couple of years it is going to be really nice. It was a nice campus and a nice town.

“Coach Trooper Taylor is one of the coolest coaches I have ever met. You can tell he really cares about his players. And coach (Brian) Early is good at keeping it real honest, which I can respect.”
