Anderson on Satellite Camps

In less than a month, the Arkansas State Red Wolves coaching staff will begin what has become an annual summer tour of prospect camps around the south.

It was something Coach Blake Anderson’s staff did last year and would like to continue if possible.

But there is some protest from some Power 5 schools.

“It has a lot of legs,’’ said Anderson. “You have schools in Alabama, Florida and Georgia who don’t like Ohio State and Michigan and northern schools coming down here and having camps.

“I’ll be surprised if we can have them next year. The schools that are upset usually get what they want.”

The Red Wolves have camps set in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas as well as Arkansas.

There are three prospect camps planned for Jonesboro, another in Little Rock (June 8), Springdale (June 8) and Texarkana (June 11).

To have a camp outside the state A-State has to partner with another school, not necessarily one within that state.

The Red Wolves begin in Atlanta area on June 1, hit Birmingham and Mobile on June 2, New Orleans and Jackson, Miss., on June 3.

After a break they camp in the Dallas area on June 12.

“They already made it where you can’t advertise your out-of-state camps,’’ said Anderson. “I don’t know what will happen. If the Power 5 schools decide against it the Group of 5 may decide it is OK.”

Arkansas State will also host two team camps: June 6 and July 17.
