By The Numbers: Defense 2014

Arkansas State’s defense struggled through much of the 2014 season and was hard hit by injuries. How big was the struggle?

Pretty straight forward analysis here. Looked at each opponent’s average yards per game and average points per game and compared that to how they did against the Red Wolves.

Only three times (ULM, Georgia State, and South Alabama) did AState hold a team to fewer yards than their season average.

Four times AState held a team below its season scoring average. The Red Wolves managed that against the three schools above as well as against Utah State.

Louisiana Lafayette had the biggest day against AState in gaining yards, topping their season average by nearly 104 yards. Toledo had the biggest scoring gain, scoring just over 26 points more than their average in the GoDaddy Bowl.

AState went 4-0 in games where the defense held a team below its average in one of the two categories and 2-6 in games where the opponent performed above average in the two categories. Idaho and New Mexico State were the only teams to lose to the Red Wolves when performing above their season average.

Chart below has the details, a plus sign means the team did better than their average and is a bad result, minus sign means below their average and is a good result.
