The Malzahn Seniors

The Red Wolf roster has six senior players who started their career at AState under Gus Malzahn. One may be back next year.


The seniors for Arkansas State in 2015 include six players who first joined the squad under Gus Malzahn. The group includes the bulk of AState's returning points scored.

Luke Ferguson, K from Jonesboro. Kicked off 46 times with 11 touchbacks in 2012. In 2013 had the second best single season punting average in school history, with 27 punts and eight downed inside the 20. In 2014 fourth on the team in scoring with 8 FGs and 36 PAT’s. Ferguson punted 56 times averaging 41.4 yards with 22 downed inside the 20 and had 80 kickoffs with 35 touchbacks.

Michael Gordon RB, from Camden, Mississippi. Played in nine games as a true freshman. In 2013 had 754 yards rushing and 206 receiving. In 2014 Gordon played in 11 games and had 14 touchdowns, 1100 rushing yards and 191 receiving.

Rocky Hayes, DB from Heflin, Alabama, played in every game as a true freshman and started four times. He was AState’s second leading rusher in 2012, averaging 9.3 yards per carry. In 2013 had three interceptions and averaged a pass defended per game as well as recording at least one tackle in every game. In 2014 he played in 12 games and had one carry for 11 yards, one interception, a 93 yard fumble return for a TD, 24 tackles, 5 pass break-ups, 3 QB hurries and one sack.

Fredi Knighten. QB from Little Rock, played in eight games as a true freshman, MVP of the GoDaddy Bowl and led AState to more than 4,000 yards of offense as the starter in 2014. Passing he completed 269 of 432 passes for 3277 yards with 24 TD’s and 7 interceptions. Rushed 211 times for 779 yards and 11 touchdowns, had two receptions for 64 yards and a TD

Raziel Valgis DB transfer from Harding who has seen mainly special teams action.

Chris Humes DB from Hoover, Alabama may return in 2016 because of his injury in 2014, he is currently listed as a senior but is eligible for an additional year for medical hardship. Played in every game as a true freshman, starting five games. Played in every game in 2013 started eight times. He had 21 tackles in 2012, 55 in 2013. In 2014 he only played in two games and had 8 tackles and one forced fumble.
