Quick Preview of Arkansas State at Utah State

First look at Friday's game.

The Red Wolves are looking to avoid the first four game losing streak (New Orleans Bowl plus this season) since 2010 and 2011 when AState dropped the final three games of 2010 and the first game of 2011. The 2010 season was the last time AState dropped three straight in the same season.

Utah State like AState has had its own period in the football wilderness. After a .500 record in 1997, they didn’t post another winning season until 2011. They won 7, 11, 9, and 10. In 2015 they went 6-6 in regular season and lost the Famous Potato Bowl 23-21 to Akron. From 2011 to now Utah State is 44-25 after going 14-46 the prior five seasons. AState has gone 44-23 since 2011 and went 25-35 the prior five years.

Utah State is 1-1 on the season defeating in-state FCS Weber State and losing at USC. Against Weber State the Aggies offense was heavily run oriented, while against USC the Aggies focused on a shorter passing game.

Special teams have been a challenge for USU. The Aggies punted twice against Weber State averaging only 19.5 yards. Against USC they had a punt blocked but averaged 41.5 yards using a rugby style punting. They gave up two long punt returns vs USC. On special teams they are 1 of 2 on field goals, missing one from 37 and making one from 31. They are 6 of 6 on PAT’s.

USU has been flagged nine times on the season compared to 16 times for the Red Wolves.

Against USC, the Aggies gave up 422 yards with 178 of that on the ground. They posted two sacks. Versus Weber State they gave up 245 yards with 108 on the ground and posted two sacks in that game as well.

This is the seventh meeting between AState and USU. The series is tied 3-3 with the home team winning every game. The first three meetings were Big West conference games and the next two were Sun Belt games.

The game will be telecast on CBS Sports Network, channel 221 on DirecTV, 158 on Dish, 126 on Suddenlink, 643 and 1643 on ATT UVerse and 274 and 1721 on Xfinity.
