Early Analysis of South Alabama

First look at the South Alabama Jaguars

Arkansas State will face South Alabama in Saturday's Homecoming game. The game will be telecast by ESPN3.

The Red Wolves carry a 10 game Sun Belt winning streak into the game, while South Alabama brings in a five-game conference losing streak.

AState has won all four meetings, despite AState's success, most of the games have been close with AState winning by 7 in 2012 and a one-point victory in Mobile in 2013 is considered the turning point of Harsin's time at AState. The 2014 meeting was an easy win for the Red Wolves while AState trailed by 11 last year until Fredi Knighten hit Tres Houston for a 38 yard TD and converted for two with a pass to McKissic with 12:33 left in the game the first 8 points of 29 unanswered points in 5:17.

The Jaguars, who are 0-4 vs. the Red Wolves, have the league’s two best victories this season but they are also 0-2 in the conference play, falling to Georgia Southern (24-9) at home and at UL-Lafayette (28-23). USA has defeated Mississippi State 21-20 and then 19th-ranked San Diego State 42-24.

“We’ve seen them beat an SEC opponent and a top 25 opponent,” said Anderson. “You watch those tapes you know why then they have hurt themselves a couple of times and lost a couple of conference games. Watching them against Mississippi's State and the way they played San Diego State. It's a really good football team. I think they are in a lot of ways like us --they have some mistakes that have cost them games that they could have won and when they play at their best they obviously have two big wins.

“It's what team is going to show up. They are probably saying the same thing about us. Which team is going to show up.?

“It took us every bit of the fourth quarter to beat them a year ago. And they have a lot of players back from last year.

“I want conference wins. In this league where you don't play everyone 1 loss really makes you nervous. Two losses puts you in a bind because you don't have control of your own destiny. We’ve seen that play out in the past. Nobody wants losses but if you are going to choose between conference and nonconference losses we want to work out all the kinks before conference play and play our best ball in conference play. That is what we are trying to do.”
