Recap of Arkansas State over ULM

Red Wolves roll past the ULM Warhawks to move to 2-0 in Sun Belt

WHAT HAPPENED

Devin Carter carried the Red Wolves with 17 points in the first half and Tamas Bruce and the rest of the team joined the parity in the second half as the Arkansas State drilled UL-Monroe for a 76-45 Sun Belt Conference victory Monday night in front of a season-best crowd of 2,954 at the Convocation Center.

The Red Wolves (11-4, 2-0 Sun Belt) needed 15 seconds to score and never trailed in the contest. They scored the first 8 and maintained a lead that did not get any closer than 4 but 1:08 left in the half. From 28-26, A-State scored the final 3 of the half and led 31-26 at the break.

In the second half, the Red Wolves rolled. The Warhawks (6-9, 0-2) scored just 17 points and shot 21 percent from the field as A-State steadily pulled away.

Carter finished with 20 points.

At halftime, Bruce, the junior from Osceola, had 5 points and 8 rebounds. When he was pulled from the floor after victory was secure, he had a career high 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Bruce was not the only Red Wolves

WHAT IT MEANS

The Red Wolves now have 11 wins and their best start since 2008-09. A-State is now 2-0 in the Sun Belt and tied for the lead as it prepares to go on a 3-game road trip -- Coastal Carolina (6-9, 1-1) Saturday afternoon and Appalachian State (5-8, 0-2)  on Monday night.  It ends at UALR on Jan. 14.

HOW IT WAS DONE

Defense, teamwork and board work. The Red Wolves did manage to shoot 46 percent for the game (27 of 59) but they limited ULM to 19 points in the second half and the Hawks shot just 24 percent from the field. The Red Wolves outrebounded ULM 48-32, an advantage that was just 21-18 at halftime. Rashad Lindsey had 9 points, 8 rebounds, CJ Foster 7/10 to with Donte Thomas, 12 points, 9 assists.

WHAT WAS SAID

“There are three guys I’m super proud of tonight with one of them being Tamas Bruce who just had a huge second half. Tamas gave us defensive rebounds and tough plays while scoring the basketball. C.J. Foster made four or five extra effort plays that made a difference in us getting second shots when we missed. Donte Thomas attacked the rim and was tremendous.

“It was fun to see three guys (Tamas Bruce, C.J. Foster and Rashad Lindsey) get career highs in rebounds. We challenged Rashad to rebound tonight and he came through after what we went through on Saturday. Good team win.”
