Arkansas State Sun Belt Tournament Primer

Getting ready for the Sun Belt Tournament

Where do we start: The Arkansas State Red Wolves open the Sun Belt Tournament as the fifth seed against UL Monroe on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Red Wolves swept both games in the regular season 76-45 at Jonesboro and 73-63 at Monroe. All of the tourney games are on ESPN3.

What happens with a Red Wolves victory: A-State would advance to the quarterfinals and face the No. 4 seed Texas State, a team that defeated them 62-58 in San Marcos last month. That game isFriday at 2 p.m. The winner most likely gets Texas-Arlington.

Where we stand: The Red Wolves did finish with 20 victory did not finish strong, losing three of the last four and five of the last seven. Four of those losses have been on the road.

Grant McCasland on the Red Wolves: “Definitely been up and down here recently. We’ve had a few more downs than ups. In the end the goal is to be playing great basketball this time of year.

“It is such a journey to get to this point of the season. Proud of the team and excited about the opportunity to get to play another game and put yourself in a position to advance in the tournament. Our guys have always responded great through the season.

On the Warhawks: “Coach Richard will have those guys playing at an extremely high level. If you evaluate their team and how hard they play and how they compete they would be at the top five of our league.

Going in trending down:  “Definitely not ideal right? You want to go in confident and playing well and excited about that your team is and you dont want to be second guessing yourself. The truth is we definitely had many opportunities to gain confidence with who we played and we are in a position to we have chave been anywhere from second to sixth.  We just need to win on our own.

“We took some steps back, probably collectively, the last few games. We played hard at Troy; against South Alabama we were not as cohesive as we have been all year long. I didn't do a good enough job of preparing us down the stretch. I think there are things we can fix and nothing fixing things better than if you win your first game  so we're putting all of our energy toward that.

We’ve always responded in a positive way. We’ve never lost more than two in a row. All our energy is on Wednesday and if we can find a way to win that one then I like our chances.  I have a concern if we led the league in defensive rebounding  up to a point but in the last few games in pivotal moments, we have given up offensive rebounds.

ULM’s Richard on the Red Wolves: “Arkansas State has had a heck of a year. They have played well most of the year. They have dropped some league games here at the end but they are one of the better teams in the league.

“They are a team, that for us, we have matchup problems against them. Some teams you match up well against; some you don’t. This is one that gives us trouble. We’ve been close to winning against every team in the league with the exception of Arkansas State.
