Birthday Pledge

Orlando (FL) Dt. Phillips linebacker LaQuentin Smith (6-2, 220) said Wednesday night that he will celebrate his 18th birthday by announcing his commitment to Arkansas, South Carolina or South Florida on Thursday night.

While the University of Arkansas has 18 commits so far in its 2011 recruiting class, none of them have come from a linebacker.

That could change Thursday night for the Razorbacks when Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips star LaQuentin Smith (6-2, 220) announces his college choice via the radio on his 18th birthday.

He will choose from a trio of finalists - Arkansas, South Carolina and South Florida.

"I'm going to call all of the coaches and then a commitment to a school," Smith said.

Smith, whose teammate Roderick Ryles is already committed to the Razorbacks, will make his pledge public a week before he is scheduled to take an official visit to Fayetteville.

Both he and Ryles – a star safety who came to the UA campt this summer with Smith – are set to fly to Arkansas on Sept. 24-26 when the Razorbacks are set to take on defending national champion Alabama.

"We're excited about getting back up there," Smith said. "I really like the place and the coaches. I didn't really get a chance to look over the campus last time, but I will when I get up there."

Dr. Phillips (2-0) blasted Palm Coast 42-0 in a preseason game and has breezed to wins over Edgewater (48-7) and Osceola (49-7) in its first two regular season contest.

But the Panthers will face a stiffer challenge this Friday night when they travel to face Olympia.

The Titans are also 2-0 with wins over Boone (38-27) and a 28-12 win over the aforementioned Edgewater squad.

"We have played really well in the first two games, but they have both been really easy wins for us," Smith said. "This is our big rival so it's going to be our first big game."
