Arkansas 12, San Diego State 4

After 11 straight at Baum Stadium, Arkansas went to California to get its first road victory of the season. The Hogs pounded out 14 hits in a 12-4 victory with Geoffrey Davenport getting the win in long relief.

The bullpen was lights out again. Lefty Geoffrey Davenport pitched stellar in relief for the second straight game, this time in a road victory as Arkansas whipped San Diego State, 12-4, Thursday night in Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Davenport (3-1) started the season in the starting rotation, but went to the bullpen when his third outing resulted in the Hogs' only loss this season, to McNeese State two Tuesdays ago. He came out of the bullpen to steady the Hogs and get a victory Sunday against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Ryne Stanek was the UA starter and he was staked to a 3-0 lead, but he was out in the second inning when the Aztecs rallied to tie it when the true freshman from Kansas City could not find the plate. Davenport got the final out of the second after SDSU tied the game, 3-3. He allowed just three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings as the Hogs pulled away. Zack Hall pitched two scoreless innings to finish off the Aztecs.

The Hogs, now 11-1, pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of four Aztec errors. Freshman Dominic Ficociello, red hot over the last two weeks, led the offense with four hits, including two doubles. He also scored four times.

Ficociello started the year just 1 for 11, but has upped his average to .447 after cracking 16 hits in his last 27 at bats. He's close to catching Kyle Robinson (.458) for the team lead in batting average after his 4 for 5 night. He leads the team with six doubles.

Collin Kuhn, after missing four games with a strained hand, socked a home run. There was also a "little league home run" by catcher James McCann. He came all the way around when his sacrifice bunt was thrown around the field. Three runs scored on the play. McCann added a two-run double and a single. Ficociello hails from Fullerton, Calif., while McCann is a native of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Bo Bigham had three hits and scored three runs and added an RBI. Jarrod McKinney and Robinson also had two hits.

San Diego State did not score after Chris Wilson's RBI double in the third off of Davenport.

Arkansas and San Diego State have three more games in the series. The Hogs are scheduled to start ace DJ Baxendale (3-0, 0.00 ERA). The Aztecs will go with their No. 1, righthander Ethan Miller (1-1, 2.84 ERA).
