Golden Quarterback

Memphis Ridgeway quarterback Jamil Golden (6-3, 200), a teammate of Arkansas commit Cordale Boyd (6-3, 292), visited Fayetteville this spring ands sees himself as a good fit for Bobby Petrino's Razorback pro-style offense.

The Razorbacks may not be done picking up top-flight football prospects from Memphis (TN) Ridgeway in the 2012 class.

Arkansas is at the top of the list for Ridgeway quarterback Jamil Golden (6-3, 200, 4.5), one of at least five signal callers the school has offered.

"I am considering Arkansas heavily, in fact they are at the very top of my list," Golden said. "I think they have a great football program and I have a teammate going up there so that would make the transition easier for me."

That teammate is offensive lineman Cordale Boyd (6-3, 292), who became the Razorbacks' fifth commitment of the 2012 class when he pledged Wednesday to sign with Arkansas.

"He's just a beast," Golden said. "I love having him protect my back in high school and would love for that to happen in college as well."

Golden has three other teammates that Arkansas has showed interest in - highly-touted defensive end Brandon Lewis (6-5, 230), TB-CB Sheldon Dawson (5-11, 170) and running back Jaylen Walton (5-10, 165).

"We have about 10 Division-I prospects coming back off of our team that finished 13-1 last season," Golden said. "We have got to have some guys step up at wide receiver."

Golden, who came up for an Arkansas scrimmage this spring, passed for over 2,300 yards and 25 touchdowns last season with just three interceptions.

"The best thing I did from my sophomore year to my junior year was read the defense better and make that right throw," Golden said. "That is why I had so few interceptions last season."

He has offers from Arkansas and Vanderbilt and interest from schools such as Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Memphis and others.

A lot of those schools – including Arkansas – are scheduled to be by during Ridgeway's spring practice, which begins on Tuesday.

"We're hearing that several schools are going to offer during our spring practice," Golden said. "I'll just let these next three or four weeks happen and see who offers, but I'm pretty much ready to have this over."

Ridgeway will end its spring practice with a May 12 scrimmage game at Olive Branch.

"That's going to be fun," Golden said. "It will be two really good teams getting after each other."

By the end of spring practice, Golden thinks he will be ready to announce a decision.

"I think by the time we finished up with practice I will go ahead and get the process over with," Golden said. "Arkansas is at the top."

One of the biggest reasons is the type of offense that the Razorbacks bring to the field.

"Arkansas runs a pro-style offense and I that's what fits me the best," Golden said. "I also think Coach Bobby Petrino is a great coach who wins while also developing quarterbacks for the NFL. They all say that Ryan Mallett is the quarterback most ready for the NFL and I feel like I am a lot like him in that I have a big arm, can read defenses real well and get my team in the right play. I think it would be a perfect fit for me."
