D-Tackle Evaluations from Willy Robinson

Defensive coordinator Willy Robinson gave us his thoughts on the interior of the defensive line after spring football. This was included in the June magazine of Hawgs Illustrated, our college football preview. We'll run through all of the positions in the coming days.

Post-spring evaluations from defensive coordinator Willy Robinson:

54 Byran Jones
6-2, 312, SO
We missed him dearly this spring (after surgery for a broken foot), but he's a youngster because of his playing time last year will benefit. In all honesty, he's got an extremely bright future. I think as he goes, our success will go.

51 Alfred Davis
6-1, 326, JR
He had a solid spring. He brings a lot of size inside which we need. He needs to continue to work on his quickness and foot speed. He's got the mental part of it down. He works hard to do the best he can with what talent he does have.

57 Jared Green
6-0, 315, SR
He contributed big time this spring. He was a walk-on who had to sit out last year as a transfer. This spring he took advantage of all of the reps he got. He can play both tackles. We are fortunate to have him. He's very coachable and worked very hard on the techniques.

92 DeQuinta Jones
6-5, 307, JR
He sat out in the spring (with shoulder surgery) and we did miss him. He has a lot of experience. He has the ideal size. He's worked extremely hard to continue to learn his position this spring. Whatever setbacks we had with him not out there physically, I thought he was very attentive and took a lot of mental reps. The biggest thing we got out of this situation in the spring, he really focused on school and did very well.

98 Robert Thomas
6-3, 325, SO
He was a great addition for us this spring. The one thing about Robert, he's extremely strong. He has very good feet. He can run; he is quick. He has pass rush ability. This spring was monumental for him to learn our defense. He showed in the spring game that he can be a dominant player and taking over a game and that was good to see.

99 Lavunce Askew
6-3, 290, SR
He had a decent spring. He wasn't healthy throughout the spring. He had a minor setback in regards to that. His development kind of took a step back just because of being injured and not being out there in a consistent fashion. When he was out there, he gave us effort and did the things you are supposed to do and is a very coachable football player.
