Hawkins Comes Aboard

Arkansas lands perhaps Texas' fastest football player when Longview grid and track star Eric Hawkins (6-0, 170, 4.34) commits to the Razorbacks on Saturday.

Longview wide receiver Eric Hawkins – possibly the fastest football player in Texas – was pretty sure where he wanted to play his college football before this weekend.

Now he's certain.

Hawkins (6-0, 170, 4.34) became the ninth Arkansas pledge of the 2012 class when he committed to the Razorbacks Saturday after a two-day unofficial visit.

"I like the way the coaching staff presents themselves," Hawkins said. "They will talk to you and put their full attention to you. I like the campus and it was more than what I expected. I expected to see some stuff, but I saw more.

"I also got to talk to one of the astronomy professors and that is what I want to major in," Hawkins said. "The coaches like me, I like them and everything just came together."

There really were only two schools competing for Hawkins' heart.

"I wasn't really looking at a lot of schools," Hawkins said. "I really just had a little competition between Arkansas and TCU. But I got to Arkansas and fell in love with it right then and there."

Hawkins will play football and run track at Arkansas as one might expect of a guy who has run a 10.32 handheld in the 100-meter dash and a 21.1 in the 200.

"Other than speed and quickness, you have got to have heart, you have got to have leadership and do things that – even though you don't want to do them – you have to do," Hawkins said.

He got to see how Arkansas uses it receivers while watching some film on Friday.

"Yesterday I watched some film on how they do their offense and they throw the ball a lot," Hawkins said. "I like that. They do a lot of different routes. They call them different things than I know and they have different blocking schemes, what you need to read with the defense and how deep you need to sit up."

Hawkins said that he and Arkansas assistant coach Bobby Allen had great rapport from their first phone call.

"I knew a lot of thing about Arkansas already, but I learn a lot of stuff from him that I didn't know," Hawkins said. "Coach Allen and I just got a good connection right then and there."
