Bringing The Heat
Arkansas is hosting two official visitors – one committed to the opponent and the other someone that the Razorbacks hope will one day be playing for them against South Carolina.
Arroyo Grande (CA) linebacker-safety Seth Jacobs (6-2, 215, 4.53) will be in Fayetteville for the second time while Gamecocks tight end commit Kelvin Rainey (6-3, 220) of Yulee, Fla., is also visiting Arkansas officially.
Jacobs, a four-star prospect according to Scout.com who is visiting with his parents and has family nearby, looked over the Razorback program while visiting Fayetteville unofficially in June.
"I really liked what I saw of the Arkansas program when I was there," Jacobs said a few weeks ago. "It will be great to see how they get ready for a game and the game-day atmosphere. It should tell me a lot and it's going to be homecoming so that will just add to it."
Jacobs, who visited Arizona State last weekend, has 15 offers with Oregon, Northwestern, UCLA, Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington, Washington State and SMU among the schools who have offered.
While some schools are recruiting him as a linebacker, the Razorback staff sees him as a hard-hitting safety in the line of current and former NFL players who have played that spot at Arkansas – Steve Atwater, Kenoy Kennedy and Ken Hamlin.
" "I really like playing defense, really loving playing the game of football," Jacobs said. "I feel like my strengths are my love for the game and how I run to the football no matter where it is at. You can always get better at every facet of the game, but I have a good work ethic so I keep working to do that."
Jacobs' dad played for Tulsa Booker T. Washington under Larry McGee, the dad of current Razorback offensive coordinator Garrick McGee.
His dad then played college football at Idaho where Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino and assistant John L. Smith were on the staff.
"My dad has a lot of respect for all those guys and it was great to get to know them when I was there," Jacobs said.
Jacobs has had a great senior season, including an opening night where he had a whopping 24 tackles, including two for lost yardage.
He also forced a fumble and a 74-yard touchdown reception in that same contest – a 38-28 loss to Lompoc.
The Eagles have won eight straight games since their season-opening loss while Jacobs has racked up 98 tackles and has two interceptions for a team that has already clinched at least a share of the conference crowd.
He's also rushed for 326 yards and five touchdowns (121 yards and two scores on just 8 carries last week) for an offense quarterbacked by Oregon State commit Brent Vaderveen, who also visited Arkansas unofficially during the summer.
Jacobs, who had 106 tackles as a junior with four sacks, three picks and a trio of forced fumbles, had 14 tackles last week.
Arroyo Grande Tom Goosen refers to Jacobs as tenacious and lauds for his work on and off the field.
"He is just a quality character young man," Goossen told the Santa Maria Times. "He is honest and dedicated and just a great young man. He is not getting all these offers because he has been sitting on his butt — he is one of the hardest-working young man we've ever had here.
"It is hard to describe just how good Seth is," Goossen added. "When you have an athlete who works as hard as he does. Is dedicated in the weight room, is gifted physically and has great speed, he can move to the ball like no one that I've ever seen."
Jacobs wants to be remembered for more than just being a football player.
"Just a great guy, football is what I do – it's not who I am," Jacobs said. "I try to carry myself well off the field and I just like to enjoy myself. So that's how I like to be remembered: As a good guy."
