Wilson led the top offense to six scores in nine possessions against the No. 1 defense in a 140-play scrimmage on a 75-degree afternoon at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Wilson completed 22 of 27 passes for 368 yards and six touchdowns. There would have been seven scores except Zack Hocker missed a 21-yard field goal.
Petrino was placed on administrative leave Thursday night by Jeff Long, the UA athletic director. Long instated Taver Johnson, the assistant head coach and linebackers coach, as interim head coach as he reviews the facts around Petrino's motorcycle wreck.
There were no interviews after the scrimmage. Johnson met with the media for about five minutes before the scrimmage.
I'd like to say that I'm overly excited and extremely proud of this football team," Johnson said before the scrimmage.
"The leadership that we have in our locker room is tremendous. Our guys have done a great job and making sure that we get together and unite. We've done an excellent job all day preparing for a big day today.
"We're going to have a full-blown scrimmage. We're going to play the game like it's supposed to be played, in our stadium, in Razorback stadium. We are extremely excited about that.
"Last night, I was informed about the situation in terms of having some leadership for our football team. In that we've all, in the coach staff, and the players, understood our rolls and are extremely excited about being able to go out and represent all of Razorback nation.
"Since Coach Petrino's accident, our main focus has been our football team. Throughout spring, our main focus has been the football team. Nothing has changed in that regard. I'm extremely proud of our guys' effort, the leadership we have in that locker room, and I'm ready to get out on that field and represent our state."
Johnson said Petrino cannot attend anything with the team, but the coaches can still communicate.
"Coach Petrino cannot be here, but we can still have conversations with him," Johnson said. "It shouldn't be a problem that way, but we're going to go on as business as usual. We're going to get our guys ready and make sure were doing the right things like going to class, and when it's time to practice, and play, well make sure we are attacking."
There were no real surprises in the scrimmage. Running back Knile Davis did not participate. Davis has not had any contact during the spring. He did go through the early part of practice before the scrimmage began.
Cornerback Tevin Mitchel did not scrimmage. He's battling a hamstring injury. There was a depth chart change behind him with Kelvin Fisher moving up to take the first team snaps ahead of Davyon McKinney.
There did not appear to be any major injuries in the scrimmage. Linebacker/safety Ross Rasner left for about half of the plays after taking a hit to the ribs on a block by Dennis Johnson. Rasner later returned. Defensive end Trey Flowers left left the scrimmage after coming out of a pile wobbly and also returned for a few plays. Offensive tackle Austin Beck limped off after an apparent knee problem.
The other quarterbacks did well, too. Brandon Mitchell and Brandon Allen alternated with the second team against the second defense with solid results. Mitchell was 12 of 17 for 144 yards and two TDs. Allen was 7 of 12 for 174 yards and two TDs.
The first team receivers got work with both the top two units on offense and had huge days. Marquel Wade had 10 catches for 203 yards and Cobi Hamilton had 10 catches for 192 yards. Austin Tate took a couple of big hits, but caught three passes for 89 yards.
