Positive Reaction

Current and future Arkansas football players react positively to the hiring of former Razorback assistant John L. Smith as head coach for the 2012 season.

Arkansas' hiring of former assistant John L. Smith appears to be a hit with the current Razorbacks and that has the 2012 signees and some 2013 prospects happy as well.

Arkansas tailback Knile Davis called it the happiest day of his life and that caught Razorback signee Taiwan Johnson's attention.

"I have not met him, but the Razorbacks that I have talked to and the ones that are on twitter talking about it just love the hire," Johnson said. "I respect Knile Davis so much and if he thinks that it is a great deal that is good enough for me."

Johnson – a defensive end from Manvel, Texas - was among the 2012 signees and the 2013 prospects on hand for last Saturday's Red-White game in Fayetteville.

"I really enjoyed being around the coaches and my future teammates and it put me at ease about Arkansas being the right place for me," Johnson said. "Now that they have hired Coach Smith, that means everybody stays around this season and that was very important to me."

Manvel wide receiver Austin Bennett – a 2013 prospect who had committed to Arkansas before Bobby Petrino was fired – says that keeping the same crew in Fayetteville was important to me.

"I love this staff and I love the fact that they are going to stay together," Bennett said. "Like I said, they are still at the top of my list."

Prestonwood (Texas) Christian tight end Christian Morgan (6-5, 245) got a call from Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino soon after the hiring of Smith was announced.

"I have not met Coach Smith, but I have heard great things from the coaches about him," Morgan said. "Coach Paul Petrino just called me and he said that the staff was so happy with the hire and he thinks they are ready to go out and win a national championship."

Morgan recently announced his intention to commit to a school after his spring game in late May.

"That is still what I am looking at, but only if it feels right," Morgan said. "I just got back from a visit to Ole Miss and am taking a visit to Wyoming this weekend and then we'll see.

"Like I have said earlier, Arkansas and Baylor have been my top two and obviously I have great feelings about both of those schools," Morgan said.
