| Alabama will count on its stout defense early in the season to give Coach Franchione time to find his playmakers on offense.
Former North Carolina head coach Carl Torbush will take over as defensive coordinator. The Bama defensive line is talented and deep. Jarret Johnson started games at end and tackle last season and made seven sacks. Defensive ends Kenny King and Kindal Moorehead will also be keys up front if they can avoid injuries. Saleem Rasheed moves to middle linebacker and Victor Ellis takes his place as outside linebacker.
"Days of Our Lives" wishes they had a storyline like the one that has played out the past three years at the Bama quarterback position. Andrew Zow and Tyler Watts will seemingly be forever locked in an ongoing battle for the starter slot. Both were listed at the top of the depth chart at the conclusion of spring practice.
The Tide offensive line lost three starters and didn't resolve much in the spring. 354-pound offensive tackle Dante Ellington will lead the unit. Franchione still isn't sure which players will step up in the receiving corps to man his four-wide passing attack.
Alabama is a mystery team this fall. Some observers contend that the Crimson Tide has always had talent -- it just wasn't coached correctly. If Franchione can get his offensive system installed while the defense leads the team through early games -- watch out.
Then again, these are the same players who allowed Arkansas to drive for the winning touchdown last season in the driving rain in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks have had recent success against Bama and are eager to tack on another in the win column while the Tide is down.
