The Vigor Connection

Mobile (AL) Vigor junior defensive end Justin Hampton (6-5, 215) backed up current Razorback freshmen JaMichael Winston and Darius Philon last season and is going through the Arkansas camp this week in an effort to get better prepared to follow in their footsteps.

Arkansas signed two talented defensive players from Mobile (AL) Vigor in its 2012 class and will no doubt be keeping tabs on a 2014 one from the same program.

Justin Thornton (6-5, 215) – a junior who is on hand for this week's football camp in Fayetteville - backed up new Razorbacks Jamichael Winston (6-6, 238) and Darius Philon (6-1, 280) last season.

"I didn't get too much playing time because if those two guys, but I had like five sacks and some other tackles for losses," Thornton said. "I think my speed is my strength."

Thornton is a cousin of Winston, who had 103 tackles, 17 sacks and 12 other tackles for lost yardage last season for 12-4 Vigor and who was on hand at camp on Sunday.

"He is my cousin, but he is more like my brother," Thornton said. "He is going to be a real good player. "He is going to make big plays."

Hampton also raved about Philon, who signed with Arkansas after being committed to Alabama and then asked to greyshirt by the national champions.

Philon had 66 tackles and 20 tackles for lost yardage – 11 of which were sacks.

"He is an awesome player," Thornton said. "He is going to be a big-time defensive end. He is out to prove everybody wrong."
