This week he was announced as Director of On Campus Recruiting at Arkansas under John L. Smith. It's the position that's been open since Jessica Dorrell was dismissed in April after an affair with Bobby Petrino.
Holt didn't have to work this year. He received a big severance package when he was terminated as defensive coordinator at Washington last winter.
But after talking to Smith several times this summer, he showed up at Arkansas and has been at practice each day of fall camp.
"More than anything, I wanted to help out Coach," Holt said. "I wanted to see him be successful. So that's what I did. I wanted to help out a good buddy. He's going to do fantastic."
Holt said his primary role will be to handle on-campus recruiting, eligibility, academics and compliance. He can't coach, but he can be ready with advice or feedback to coaches, especially Smith.
"I've been with Coach Smith quite a bit since I've been here," Holt said. "I'm available for him."
Holt said he's been aware of the situation at Arkansas. He had worked with Bobby and Paul Petrino before and coached for Smith at several stops.
"Coach Smith recruited me out of high school," Holt said. "So I was with him in the 1990s.
"I can tell you one thing about him that's never changed, he's a great person. He's in coaching for the right reasons, to be a mentor for young coaches and for players. He's a fantastic role model. He is who he is and that never changes."
What has he seen in his short time at Arkansas?
"We have a chance to be real good," Holt said. "The offense is really good with good players in the skill positions. And the defense is coming around. It's going to be an exciting season."
