It's just a preseason poll, but Arkansas' basketball program continued its climb back up the respect ladder nationally on Monday.
That's when the SEC Media poll was released with the Razorbacks picked fifth in the 14-team league while sophomore guard BJ Young was tabbed a first-team selection and junior forward Marshawn Powell a second-team selectee.
Kentucky – who has reloaded after a perfect 16-0 last season - was tabbed the league favorite with Florida, Missouri and Tennessee picked ahead of Arkansas.
"I think we are going to be a lot better team that we were last season and I think the fans are going to love watching us play," Young said. "I think we are going to surprise a lot of people and put ourselves back on the map nationally."
Young averaged 15 points last season – tops among SEC newcomers – while Powell averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds while playing only two games before a season-ending injury.
Young is excited about the possibility of playing a full season with Powell.
"Her is a big-time player and we are happy to have him back this year," Young said.
Arkansas was 18-14 overall and 6-10 in conference action last season in head coach Mike Anderson's first year at the helm of the Razorbacks.
The team started 16-6 last season, but then lost eight of its last 10 games as a short-handed squad ran out of gas.
"That's not going to be the case this season," Young said. "We have so many people that we are just going to come at you in waves."
The Razorbacks will play their Red-White game Tuesday, Oct. 30 and then have exhibition games against Southwest Baptist on Nov. 2 and LeMoyne-Owen on Nov. 5 before opening the season Nov. 9 against Sam Houston State.
