Weed (CA) College of the Siskyious linebacker Myke Tavarres already has some running to do once he gets to Fayetteville.
That's because of the way Tavarres (6-2, 223) chose to announce his college decision to new Razorback head coach Bret Bielema.
"I'm kind of a guy who likes to joke around," Tavarres said. "So I decided to call him and have a little fun once I made my decision. I said ‘Coach, I have decided to go to Boise State.'
"I think his heart truly stopped when I said that," Tavarres added "It got real quiet and then I said 'Coach, I'm just kidding. I'm going to be a Razorback.' He told me that for my little joke I already have some running to do once I get to Arkansas."
Bielema is having quite a first day of the national mid-term junior college signing period n the first test of his recruiting prowess as the head coach at Arkansas.
He has already signed two-time Junior College All-American offensive lineman John McClure (6-4, 310), Hartnell (CA) College cornerback Carroll Washington (6-1, 180) and Tavarres.
The Razorbacks are also set to sign Georgia Military College safety Tiquention Coleman (5-11, 190) and could also land Coffeyville (KA) CC linebacker Martrell Spaight (6-0, 220).
Spaight, a former North Little Rock standout, was also recently named a NJCAA first-team All-American, and will sign with either Arkansas or Kansas State at noon today.
"We are building something very special under Coach Bielema," Tavarres said. "I love what he is bringing to the Arkansas program."
Tavarres said it was close, but he decided to stick with Arkansas in the end.
"With the new staff coming in at Arkansas there was a lot of what ifs and so I needed to take a look around and make sure I ended up at the best place," Tavarres said. "But I wanted to be a man of my word."
Once Tavarres – who led his team with 85 tackles in 10 games - got a chance to meet with Bielema things started to fall into place.
"I think he is a great coach and the combination of him and the fans are just the best thing for me," Tavarres said. "I am going to a place where they care not only for the football player, but the person. The Arkansas fans are great and probably the biggest reason I am a Razorback."
Tavarres also had 2.5 sacks and two interceptions – both of which he took back for touchdowns.
"I am ready to come in and help right away as both a player and a leader," Tavarres said. "I am very excited about the future."
