Stewart's Prime Time Push
Fresh off being tabbed as having the nation's fifth-best recruiting class when it comes to 2015 by Scout.com, Arkansas' football program will attempt to continue its momentum by hosting a pair of Junior Days the next two weekends.
Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema and his staff are expecting six Razorback prospects this Saturday and over a dozen slated to be on hand for March 1.
"The good news is, in my opinion, that the classes coming up have a lot of talent," Bielema said. "That is the way I think Arkansas has been. I looked at their signings a year ago and from the last several years, it kind of fluctuates little bit. Sometimes the numbers of recruits are a little high and some years it might be four or five and another year it might be 10.
"Whatever that number is, if they can play SEC football we want them and that is a big part of what we want to do here," Bielema added. "I think (Arkansas assistant coach Barry) Lunney has done a good job and our coaches understand what we want here.
"As soon as there is a player in Arkansas for their position our coaches look at them right away so that we get a fair and just evaluation on them and if that kid can play we need to get him here," Bielema continued.
One of those due in March 1 is Highland junior wide receiver Deon Stewart (6-1, 163, 4.48), who is coming off a breakout season.
Stewart, who was born in Newport, had 36 catches for 757 yards and 8 touchdowns and also rushed 27 times for 448 yards and four more scores.
He now has offers from Louisville, Arkansas State, Tulsa and Southern Miss and Ole Miss and is one of two Division I prospects at the Hardy school along with junior safety Avery Johnson (6-2, 210).
"Avery and I have talked about how amazing it would be if the two of us get offers from Arkansas and would end up playing together for the Razorbacks," Stewart said. "It really would become a dream come true for the both of us."
Stewart said that the Razorbacks are looking at him as a slot receiver.
"My strengths are my speed, my hands and my ability to go get the football," Stewart said. "I need to get stronger and put on weight. In fact, I am in the weight room trying to do that right now."
While Stewart has gotten four offers already, he understands why Arkansas has not put one on the table yet.
"Coach Bielema and Coach Lunney have told us both about how before they offer in-state kids that they really want to get to know them both on and off the field," Stewart said. "They want to make sure they are getting high character kids along with great athletes because when they offer, it will never be taken back.
"My mom and I are coming up and I am really looking forward to getting a better relationship with all of the coaches and just checking out everything there on campus," Stewart added. "I totally understand what they are doing with the Arkansas guys."
Stewart has seen one Arkansas game in Little Rock and a pair in Fayetteville.
"I can really see myself playing at Arkansas and hopefully it will all work out," Stewart said. "I can't say I would definitely commit right away after getting an offer, but then again, I probably would after talking it over with my mom."
