Razorbacks Hit Recruiting Trail
Arkansas coaches will get out on the recruiting trail on Wednesday after the spring evaluation period got underway Tuesday and lasts for the next six weeks.
New Razorback recruiting coordinator E.K. Franks talked last weekend about what an important time this is for the staff – even as they finish up the final two weeks of spring practice.
"Basically you get six weeks to use four weeks of evaluation," Franks said. "It is such an important time for so many reasons. Let's be honest – it's about getting players in your program. We all become better coaches with better players."
Arkansas is expected to have wide receivers coach Michael Smith in to see several North Little Rock prospects on Wednesday – including wideout K.J. Hill – while running backs coach Joel Thomas will be in Jonesboro to see sophomore tailback Denzel Mitchell.
The Razorbacks haves seven commitments already in their 2015 class, one that is rated ninth nationally right now by Scout.com.
"This period is so important because you need to go see all the kids that you have already offered number one, you get to make sure you make contact with every kid that you have already offered," Franks said. "You are able to get a feel for him, to look in his eyes and see what he thinks about Razorback football.
"...Two, the evaluation period is awesome now because everybody has spring football so now you get to actually see him instead of just on film," Franks added. "I get to see him compete and go at it.
"In certain states now, they even have jamborees so they are able to go against other teams," Franks continued. "Florida and Louisiana now both have jamborees so they can go against other people. You get a chance to evaluate them again."
While there are many recruits that every one knows, Franks knows it is important to find those just blossoming as well.
"Maybe you have one kid that is a borderline kid and now he has developed over the winter and you get a chance to see where he is at now," Franks said. "He might be a guy that you watch and extend an offer going into the fall. Or you might just add him to the board and keep an eye on him as he plays the first three or four games next fall."
Franks also knows this is an important time for the Arkansas coaches to bond with the coaches of the high school and junior college prospects.
"What I want to bring to our guys is this is networking with the high school coaches," Franks said. "Now let's go out and hit all of the schools in your area, or at least the majority of schools in your area. Let's make a plan and get to as many as we can. Cause don't think they don't play a big part in getting a kid to camp in the summer or in his decision later on."
