Arkansas 4, Missouri State 1

Michael Bernal hits a homer in a four-run second inning and Arkansas downs Missouri State 4-1 Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Michael Bernal made headlines with his bat instead of his glove on Tuesday while leading Arkansas to a coveted mid-week win in its last non-conference game of the regular season.

Bernal launched a two-run homer as Razorbacks scored all four of their runs and got five of their seven hits in the second inning and went on to down Missouri State 4-1 at Hammons Field.

The Razorbacks used seven different pitchers in the game.

"I thought our pitching staff did a great job, basically we had it scripted out where everyone would go two innings and fortunately we got the lead the held them down," Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. "That was a good road win."

The game was an opener of a twinbill that featured a pair of AA clubs in the St. Louis Cardinals' Springfield club and Kansas Royals' Northwest Arkansas squad playing the nightcap.

Jake Wise added a sacrifice fly and Andrew Benintendi an RBI single for the other runs in the fourth inning, which began with the Razorbacks down 1-0.

Colin Porche started the game on the mound for Arkansas, but lasted just a pair of innings while walking four and giving up one of the Bears' five hits on the day.

Jackson Lowery and winner Dominic Taccolini (2-0) each hurled a pair of innings with Jacob Stone, Zach Jackson and Michael Gunn – who picked up his seventh save – pitching one frame each.

Arkansas (29-18, 10-11) will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. when it travels to No. 11 Ole Miss to start a three-game set.
