Whether it be as a safety or a tailback, Pittsburg Kan., High standout Alex Barnes is going to get the chance to play college football.
Barnes (6-0, 212) impressed the Arkansas coaches at a recent Elite Camp and they believe he might be best suited for defensive backfield than the offensive one.
"I thought it went pretty well for me (at Arkansas' camp)," Barnes said. "I learned a lot of new things at safety because they want to see me on defense, but I also thought I did pretty good in the running back role.
"They like my athletic ability and think I am a little raw fundamentally, but they definitely like what I have in the 40," Barnes added.
He has now taken several unofficial visits to Arkansas.
"They are a good team and they are a program that is on the rise and they are in possibly the most competitive division in football in the SEC West," Barnes said.
Barnes got a chance to work with Arkansas running backs coach Joel Thomas and safety coach Clay Jennings.
"I need to work on some little things like Coach Thomas was stressing like planting with my outside foot and getting vertical after the cut," Barnes said. "I need to work a lot on defense because I am really raw there fundamentally like with the backpedal."
Barnes has four offers so far – Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota and Rutgers – all as an athlete.
"Most people are actually looking at me as a safety, because they think I have more potential there than I do offensively," Barnes said. "Right now I prefer to play running back because I am more familiar with the position, but I am not opposed to playing safety at all."
Barnes is not in any hurry to make a decision.
"I am just going to kind of lay back and just let the recruiting process play out," Barnes said. "I am going to take a couple of visits to Rutgers and Minnesota maybe like the end of July."
