"We had a good physical workout with pads on today," UA head coach Houston Nutt said. "We were really going over all the plays for UNLV. On defense we worked on the counter trying to get a hat on a hat. We're trying to stop a very talented quarterback who can make things happen. Offensively, we tried to polish all our stuff. We tried to get in everything that is on the game plan."
In a vote that was held on Friday evening, the team selected Kenny Sandlin, La'Zerius White, Curt Davis and Carlos Hall as the captains for the upcoming season. Sandlin, who has been a mainstay on the offensive line for the past three seasons, brings a streak of 24 straight starts into his senior season. White also has that many consecutive starts as he has handled the left guard position over the last three years. Davis is a fifth year senior started all 12 games as nose guard in 2000 where he recorded 37 tackles. Hall has played in 32 games to this point in his Razorback career as a defensive end. A season ago, he made 12 starts at bandit end and ranked fifth on the squad with 43 tackles including 26 unassisted stops.
"Those four out of our 12 seniors are top notch and first class in leading our team," Nutt said. "The vote was absolutely unanimous."
Next Thursday night's game in Little Rock, Ark. will be a rematch of the Las Vegas Bowl meeting between the two schools from a year ago. In that contest, UNLV rallied from a 14-7 second-quarter deficit to score 24 unanswered points en route to a 31-14 victory. The game marks the third time in school history that the Razorbacks will play the same opponent at the end of one season and the beginning of the following season. UA played Fort Smith High School in its only game in 1895 and opened the 1896 campaign against FSHS with both game played in Fayetteville. Arkansas also closed the 1953 season and opened the 1954 season against Tulsa, again with both games in Fayetteville.
"The thing that fooled you out there is that we had great bowl week practices," Nutt said. "They were probably too good and that is where they fooled you. That's light years ago though for me."
