Mallett Greets Arkansas Media

It was the perfect bowl matchup for Ryan Mallett, with Arkansas playing Texas less than one mile from his current housing.

Houston -- Ryan Mallett knew when Arkansas became bowl eligible that he would try to make the bowl game. Then, the pairings came out and things became simple.

"I got excited because it really helped my travel plans," Mallett said Monday night in the media center at NRG Stadium ahead of the Arkansas-Texas game in the Texas Bowl.

"I live 0.7 miles. I didn't have to drive very far. It made it great for me."

Mallett is rehabbing from surgery for a torn chest muscle after joining the Houston Texans after an early-season trade with New England. Mallett quarterbacked the Razorbacks in 2009-10, leading them to the Liberty and Sugar Bowls.

After playing in border town Texarkana in high school, Mallett has a good feeling for the Texas-Arkansas rivalry.

"I saw how you hated Texas growing up," he said. "I've enjoyed seeing the Hogs get back to winning and those two shutouts at the end of the year were awesome. Watching them with the guys in the team hotel, it was pretty good to win those SEC games and give me bragging rights."

Mallett said he's had a chance to meet Arkansas coach Bret Bielema a couple of times while working out in Fayetteville on summer visits.

"I've talked with him briefly," Mallett said. "I'm always happy when we are winning."

Mallett said he would watch the game from the stands. He's wearing a sling while rehabbing from chest surgery from a torn pectoral. He said he would be full go by training camp.
