The Pulaski Robinson (Little Rock, Ark.) three-star athlete tweeted his decision following Arkansas’ open scrimmage Saturday afternoon, which he attended with his parents.
“I’ve just been waiting for the right time,” Hammonds said. “I wanted my parents to meet everybody and they loved it. My mom loves (head coach Bret Bielema). That’s when I pulled the trigger.
“It felt like home. I already have great chemistry with the players and I don’t even go there yet.”
He chose Arkansas over offers from several other schools, including Arizona, Arizona State, Duke, Oklahoma State, TCU and Vanderbilt. His decision came just two days after his latest offer, from Georgia.
During the spring, Hammonds attended junior days at Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss, but it was during his most recent unofficial visit to Arkansas – his second in the last two months – that he made his decision.
In a meeting in his office before the scrimmage, Hammonds told Bielema that he wanted to play for the Razorbacks.
“I wanted to wait later, but it felt like I needed to commit there,” Hammonds said. “I followed my instincts.”
As a junior at Pulaski Robinson, he caught 42 passes for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 835 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 12.7 yards per carry and 18.0 yards per touch.
Hammonds said he talked to Bielema and offensive coordinator Dan Enos about which position – running back or wide receiver – he would play at Arkansas and they told him they’d figure it out once he got on campus.
He joins four-star defensive tackle Austin Capps (Star City, Ark.) and three-star wide receiver Jordan Jones (Smackover, Ark.) as Class of 2016 commits for the Razorbacks. Three-star defensive tackle Briston Guidry (Metairie, La., Archbishop Rummel) committed Saturday after Hammonds.
Jones helped recruit Hammonds to the Razorbacks.
“He really wanted me there with him,” Hammonds said. “That’s my best friend. I want to win a national championship with him.”
