Freshmen Join Cage Workouts

Dudley Dawson, our hoops contributing editor, gives you his thoughts of Monday's basketball workout ... the first with the newcomers.

Here are Dudley Dawson's thoughts in a notes format from Monday morning's basketball practice. Don Oglesby and Dudley Dawson provide timely updates on basketball practice on our premium message board.

Only Charles Tatum has an 8:30 a.m. class so they were able to get in some work before everybody else's 9:30 a.m. classes.

The morning workouts will be closed from this point on, but the 3:30 p.m. afternoon workouts will be open to the public and media.

Ronnie Brewer, Olu Famutimi, Preston Cranford and Vincent Hunter all went through practice giving Arkansas 11 healthy players to go through a workout.

Lots and lots of fundamental work, a little full court stuff.

"It sure was fun to finally have everybody out there," UA head coach Stan Heath said. "It makes everything run much smoother and brought an energy to the floor."

Some tidbits:

• Ferguson, Tatum and Brewer were working at point guard in the sets with different groups while Hunter and Mike Jones were working the high post and Sullivan and Pharis camping down low.

• Famutimi, wearing his brace, roared off a couple of in bounds plays and dunked - those of the baby slam kind instead of the monster jams for a purpose.

Trainer Dave England said he did all the things without any pain, but they might hold him back on some things down the line just to be safe.

•Former Georgetown coach John Thompson, dad of UA assistant Ronny, will be in Fayetteville Tuesday to watch practice.

"He says he's coming to see me, but what he is really doing is coming to see my (one-year-old) son," Ronny Thompson said. "He's not fooling anyone."

Next practice is at 3:30.
