Thursday Grid Report, 10/2

Arkansas had a brief practice with a skeleton staff present before taking a couple of days off for the open date.

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt and a couple of his assistants worked the team in a brief workout Thursday before giving the squad the weekend off.

Nutt and assistants Roy Wittke and Dave Wommack were the only fulltime coaches present for the short workout. The rest of the UA staff hit the road for evaluations of possible recruits, Nutt said.

"We had a good day today," Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. "We worked hard on punt returns. We hit some things offensively and defensively for Auburn, just trying to get a head start on our game plan. It's been a good week and we're going to give them a couple days off and start back on Sunday."

Nutt also commented on the improved condition of seniors Lawrence Richardson and George Wilson. Both have been saddled with high ankle sprains. Richardson has missed the last two ball games.

"George looked a lot better today," Nutt said. "He was jogging and that's real encouraging. Lawrence is getting better, but we gave him the day off and that will really help him having a full 72 hours to stay off it. Hopefully he'll be a 100 percent by Sunday."

The Hogs worked three days in full pads, mostly to correct fundamentals and look at young players in scrimmage situations during the open date. Game time Saturday for Auburn is at 11:30 a.m. in Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Jefferson-Pilot will televise the game regionally.
