Dudley Dawson Joins HI Full Time

Hawgs Illustrated adds longtime Razorback beat writer Dudley Dawson as full-time staffer. Football recruiting to be added to duties.

Dudley Dawson was the first free-lancer to commit to writing for Hawgs Illustrated in 1992. On Tuesday Dawson became HI's second fulltime employee when he signed a contract to serve as the magazine's Recruiting Editor and join Publisher Clay Henry. His switch to HI is immediate.

Dawson will concentrate on football and basketball recruiting for Hawgs Illustrated and will also become heavily involved with both the website and magazine in game coverage for the major sports at the University of Arkansas.

Hawgs Illustrated began in April of 1992, and Dawson was the first writer contacted to serve as a contributing editor by Clay Henry, then HI's editor.

"I've known Dudley for many years and considered him to be the top recruiting writer on all things Razorback," said Henry, Publisher at HI. "He handled our football and basketball recruiting duties for many years with the magazine, but settled in on basketball recruiting when he became sports editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times. He wanted to get involved in football recruiting again and work with us full time. It's a dream matchup in my mind."

Dawson had worked at the Times since July 7, 1988 with a 22-month hiatus in which he wrote his second book, "Razorbacks Handbook: Stories, Stats and Stuff about Arkansas Basketball."

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with Clay full-time and do some wonderful things with both Hawgs Illustrated magazine and its website," Dawson said. "I have been with the magazine since its inception in 1992 and its best days are ahead.

"Working for Hawgs Illustrated is one of the very few situations I would have left the Northwest Arkansas Times for," Dawson said. "But at the end of the day, it and continuing to be on Sports Rap provides me an opportunity to spend more time with my family than my present situation. That is the most important thing for me at this time in my life."

"One of the things that excites me most is the immediacy of the website. If a recruit commits at 10 a.m., I can put that up on the website immediately instead of having to wait until the next day to have it in the newspaper. That's just one of the many things that excites me about my new venture."
