Petty Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

After making 20 tackles, including the game-winner on the two-point conversion attempt in the seventh overtime, Arkansas senior linebacker Jermaine Petty has been named the Southeastern Conference's Defensive Player of the Week.

Petty tackled Ole Miss tight end Doug Zeigler at the two on the two-point conversion attempt to give the Razorbacks (5-3, 3-3) the 58-56 victory.

The game-winning tackle was Petty's 103rd play of the game. He was on the field for all 92 of Ole Miss' offensive snaps, six two-point conversion attempts and five punts.

The Inman, S.C., native leads the SEC with 108 tackles. He is the second Razorback to earn SEC Player of the Week honors this year. Sophomore free safety Ken Hamlin earned defensive honors after recording 11 tackles, two tackles for losses, one sack, an interception, recovering a fumble and breaking up two passes in the season opener against UNLV.

Freshman quarterback Matt Jones also earned player of the week honors. Jones, from Fort Smith, was named CNNSI.com's National Player of the Week after running for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries and completing three of six passes for 61 yards and a score.

Jones is the first Arkansas quarterback to run for 100 yards in a game since Quinn Grovey gained 105 yards on eight carries against Texas Tech in 1989.

All of Jones' passing totals plus seven rushes for 55 yards and his two touchdowns came in the seven overtime periods. Not including in his passing totals are two two-point conversion completions, one to Jason Peters to send the game to the seventh overtime and the game-winner to Decori Birmingham.

Jones accounted for 116 of Arkansas' 157 yards of offense in the overtime periods.
