Grid Update, 4/5

Arkansas worked in full pads Monday with an emphasis on correcting mistakes and improving fundamentals. The Hogs also got after it in an extensive middle drill.

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said there were plenty of good things in Saturday's scrimmage after reviewing film. He liked the effort and intensity of the defense.

Nutt praised the work of Jeb Huckeba, Michael Coe, Vickiel Vaughn and Lerinezo Robinson in the scrimmage.

Monday's workout was spent correcting mitakes spotted in the film, but the Hogs did take time from individual drills to square off in a long middle drill, again with the defense controlling the play.

"Lucas Jackson really showed up at nose guard in our middle drill," Nutt said. "He didn't take a wrong step."

Linebackers Marcus Whitmore, Pierre Brown, Sam Olajubutu, Clarke Moore and Desmond Sims also made impressive plays in the middle drill.

Matt Jones spent most of the afternoon away from the practice in Reynolds Razorback Stadium working on shoulder strengthening exercises under the guidance of trainers.

"This is stuff that the other quarterbacks got when I was with basketball," Jones said. "All of them said it really helped the velocity of their passes. It's something I really need, too. I'm going to do this to try to catchup with my arm strength. My shoulder feels fine, but it's something that the coaches and trainers want us to do."

The Hogs will work in full pads again Tuesday, then conduct a major scrimmage at 7 p.m. Wednesday to conclude spring drills. Nutt moved the scrimmage to the evening as to not to conflict with class schedules. Several players have afternoon classes on Wednesday, the reason the team has taken off on Wednesdays the first two weeks of spring drills.
