Huckeba Valuable Team Member

Even while relaxing, it seems these Razorbacks love to compete. Jeb Huckeba can pound the golf ball as well as grid iron foes.

You want Arkansas defensive end Jeb Huckeba on your team because of his leadership, character and ability. And, that goes for Matt Jones, too.

That is true in football, but it could be true, too, if you are playing in a golf scramble. Huckeba's decent tee shots with his new driver go about 315 yards (without much roll) and his great ones go about 350.

Huckeba, Clarke Moore, Matt Jones and Jared Hicks had a regular golf game at Lost Springs CC in Rogers this summer.

"I'm telling you, Matt will compete, we all know that," Huckeba said. "He probably is going to break 100 most of the time, and at the end of the summer, he was breaking 90 some of the time. Late in the round, he'll get consistent with his drives and they are about 270, right down the middle.

"I know this; if you are going to play or compete in anything, Matt is going to figure it out. He's someone you want on your side. We all know that. He competes very hard at golf."

Huckeba and Jones asked if they could have a team with this writer and fellow journalist Harry King in a four-man scramble sometime next spring. Clarke Moore said, "What about me?" Huckeba and Jones weren't sure there was a place for Moore. Apparently, golf is not his strong suit. He may need more practice.

"I can make a putt from time to time and I'm a good chipper, but the rest isn't so good," Moore said. "I hit it pretty much everywhere. It goes a long way, but I never know which direction. Jeb has the swing for it. He's straight and long off the tee. Some of his drives are beyond long."
