UA sizes up Wisconsin's Valdez

Wisconsin offensive lineman Jose Valdez now has a UA offer to go along with interest from several other schools.

Wisconsin prep offensive lineman Jose Valdez has never been to the University of Arkansas, but he likes what he hears about it.

Especially after the Razorbacks put a scholarship offer on the table earlier this week after some good initial recruiting and evaluation by UA assistants Roy Wittke and Mike Markuson.

"It was great to get an offer from Arkansas," Valdez said. "It's a great SEC school and I hear a lot of good things about it. The coaches are very friendly. And I know all about (former Razorback and first-round NFL draft pick) Shawn Andrews."

Valdez, a 6-6, 305-pound prospect from St. Francis, says he is also hearing from Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Ball State, Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.

"I ram just starting the recruiting process and I really don't have a favorite right now," Valdez said. "They are just all very good schools that I look forward to finding a lot out about."

Valdez notes that he feels good about his play at the line of scrimmage, but is working to improve in a couple of areas.

"I need to work on my speed and my strength, but I think I have very good technique with my run blocking and my pass blocking," Valdez said. "I am just working hard to be the best I can be."

His team, which lost in the second round of the state playoffs last season, opens its season on Aug. 27 with high hopes for the offense and questions for the defense.

"We've got our whole offensive line back and we feel real good about our offense," Valdez said, "but we lost everybody on defense and that's where we have to come together."
