Bowl Practice: Dec. 27

Arkansas may have to alter its starting backup because of an injury to a key player. Bowl update.

Arkansas tailback Cedric Cobbs did not practice Thursday in the team's first Cotton Bowl workout in Dallas. The Hogs worked for about two hours at Texas Stadium.

Cobbs injured his back lifting weights last week, and may not be available when Arkansas faces Oklahoma on New Year's Day in the Cotton Bowl. Cobbs reinjured the back after arriving in Dallas. The Hogs will monitor his progress this week, but he is not likely to start since he probably won't practice the rest of the weekend.

Brandon Holmes, sophomore tailback, will likely start in Cobbs' place. True freshman DeCori Birmingham is also groomed for action at tailback. Fred Talley, the starter for much of the season, also is practicing and could see action. Talley currently is serving a supspension, but has not been ruled out from playing in the game.

The first 20 minutes of the Hogs' practice was open to the public, and during that action Matt Jones was sharp at quarterback, throwing the ball exceptionally well. The Hogs are slated to practice again at Texas Stadium on Friday. Again, practice will be open for the early periods, but Houston Nutt said he will continue to close the team portions of the drills.
