It's Finally On

It's the game of the year in high school football in Arkansas even though it's happening in the semifinals and not the finals of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

No. 1 Springdale (12-0) visits No. 2 Little Rock Central (11-1) for a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Quigley Stadium in a much anticipated contest.

Mitch Mustain, Springdale's junior quarterback that has already been offered a scholarship by the University of Arkansas, is glad it's finally here.

"I don't think we would have wanted anything less," Mustain said. "We would be kind of cheating ourselves if we had to play anybody else."

Kevin Thornton (6-2, 190), Central's big-hitting safety that Arkansas covets and a standout rated as the state's best defensive player, knows the Red Bulldogs will be a challenge.

He and defensive end Antwain Robinson (6-3, 235), who is out for the season and Central wideout Stewart Franks and running back Mickey Dean are among the players Arkansas is involved with.

"It's what everybody has been talking about," Thornton said. "I'm sure everybody on the field and in the stands will be ready for that one."

The game will be a rematch of last year's quarterfinal round game - also played at Central - where the homestanding Tigers downed the Red Bulldogs 21-7 and then on to win the state championship.

"They are a great team and they have shown that the last two years," Mustain said. "Last year we went down there and we had trouble with them, but this is a whole new year. They are still a great team and their loss to Bryant (a 22-20 defeat on a last-second touchdown) was a fluke I think."

"We have to be ready for them, because they are sure going to be ready for us," Mustain said.

Mustain has thrown for over 2,000 yard and 20 touchdowns this season.

Mustain passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 100 yards and another score in his team's 42-7 win over Texarkana last Friday.

Two of those touchdowns went to speedy all-purpose player Damian Williams (6-1, 180), another junior who has already been offered by Arkansas. Williams had five catches for 98 yards against Texarkana after missing a few games with injuries earlier.

"I am looking forward to going back to Quigley this year," Williams said. "The team stepped up without me, but it feels real good to be back in the mix making plays. I can't wait for this game."
