Nutt, Herring To Sort Out Staff

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas coach Houston Nutt has his new defensive coordinator in place after hiring long-time friend Reggie Herring on Saturday.

Now, he and Herring will begin sorting out Arkansas defensive assistants Tracy Rocker, Bobby Allen and Chris Vaughn.

"We haven't solidified anything, haven't had enough time," Herring said Sunday. "Just to be up front with you right now, Tracy Rocker is defensive line coach and our secondary coach (Bobby Allen) will stay there. I think the biggest decision we'll have to make is, is what we do with (Chris Vaughn) and whether he helps me or goes to defensive ends or coaches the safeties.

"We're throwing around ideas. I know what I'd prefer to do. But we're going to do what's best for the team."

Vaughn coached middle linebackers in 2004, but the position is expected to be filled by Herring. The 28-year-old Vaughn, who also works as Arkansas' recruiting coordinator, has coached outside linebackers and strong safeties in five seasons with the Razorbacks.

Herring met with Allen after Sunday's press conference and said it'll be beneficial having Rocker on staff because "he knows where I'll be coming from." Rocker played at Auburn when Herring worked as linebackers coach under Pat Dye. Herring said Rocker was the "foundation" of an Auburn defense built on "toughness."

Nutt declined to discuss details, but hopes to have everything sorted out soon.

"I'd just like to get through another few days before we really put a stamp on (the coaching staff)," Nutt said. "We just don't know."
