Smith announces for Arkansas

As expected, Florida prep running back Michael Smith announces Tuesday night that he is going to be a Razorback.

Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards running back Michael Smith gave a verbal pledge to University of Arkansas head football coach Houston Nutt on Tuesday night.

"I needed to go somewhere that I felt comfortable," Smith Jr. said. "From the time I seen the coaches at the airport until it was time to leave, everything and everyone made me feel right at home."

Smith Jr. (5-8, 170, 4.31) was recruited by Arkansas assistant coach Chris Vaughn.

"Coach Vaughn has been one of the most honest coahes recruiting me," Smith said. "Arkansas and Purdue coaches where the two schools that I felt the coaches are honest as oppose to promising me this and that.

"Whenever the coaches told me it was time to go Sunday morning after breakfast, I really didn't want to leave."

For the season, Smith Jr. accounted for over 2,600 all-purpose yards, a lot of that coming on returns.

"I almost had 1,000 yards in returns," Smith said.

While on his visit last weekend, Smith watched film of former Arkansas running back Fred Talley and likes the comparison.

"I could see why the coaches feel like Fred and I are the same style running back, but I feel like I'm a little bit faster than he was," Smith said.

"The Arkansas coaches liked my film and they feel like I could come in and be a game breaker," Smith added. "I know that I'm going to have to come in and work hard and earn some playing time."
