Bearden's Best

Bearden linebacker Ben Owens (6-2, 210, 4.55) will officially visit four or five schools with the University of Arkansas slated to host him on Jan. 21-23.

While starring on the basketball court, Bearden standout Ben Owens has also got his football visit gameplan in order.

Owens, a 6-2, 210-pound linebacker who had 129 tackles this past season and also rushed for over 1,200 yards, has the University of Arkansas as one of the four or five teams he will visit officially beginning in January.

He'll visit Arkansas State on Jan. 7-9, Vanderbilt Jan. 14-16, Arkansas Jan. 21-23 and Oklahoma State on Jan. 28-30. A possible fifth visit could be a mid-week one to Louisiana-Monroe in between Arkansas and Oklahoma State.

"That's how things have worked themselves out," Owens said. "It's been hard to get them worked out around basketball, but I think everything is all worked out now and I'm excited to make the visits."

Ironically, it will be at least the second time Owens has seen each school since he took unofficial visits to each one during the season.

"By going up to the games, I got a real good feel about how things are on gameday and that's helped move the process along," Owens said. "It was a kind of brush with how things are. It was a great way to who treated you best, even though they all had to focus on the game first."

That led to the inevitable question of who treated him best.

"That's a good question, Mr. Dawson, but you know I'm smart enough not to answer it," Owens said laughing. "I don't want to make anybody mad."

Owens is looking forward to visiting with new Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring.

"Arkansas is still up there at the top for me, but I have read where Coach Herring is looking over the recruits to make sure everybody fits in his scheme," Owens said. "I hope I'm his type of guy. (Arkansas recruiting coordinator) Coach (Chris) Vaughn called me a few days ago and we got the visit set up so I think things are good there."

Owens is averaging 11.8 points and 12 rebounds for a 6-1 team and has taking a little football mentality to the basketball court.

"Things are going really well in basketball," Owens said. "I am playing very physical. In fact, I am averaging about three or four fouls a game."
