"It's been a fight all year," said Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn. "I'm not going to go crazy over it, I'm past that. It's just such an uphill battle. We're going to just keep fighting because we can't wait until next year.
"We've just got to go with the pitchers we've got and find a way to get it done."
Maday threw a breaking ball for a strike on the first pitch of the game and seemed to be well on his way to a solid start until Kentucky scored four runs with two outs in the first. After giving up a solo homer and an infield single to start the second, Maday was relieved by Devin Collis with no outs.
It was Maday's first start this season after he started 11 times a year ago.
"With Daryl, everything was belt-high and he didn't have a good outing, obviously."
In Southeastern Conference games, the Razorbacks' No. 2 guys are averaging barely more than two innings with seven starters going a combined 14 2/3 innings.
That's counting 6 1/3 innings from Charley Boyce in an 8-7 loss at Auburn and three innings from Boyce in a 12-3 loss at South Carolina on March 19.
Without Boyce, who moved to the bullpen in early April, Saturday starters Maday, James Gilbert and Shaun Seibert have combined for just 5 1/3 innings in five starts.
"There's no one more frustrated about it than (UA pitching coach) Dave Jorn," Van Horn said. "He feels like when the pitching doesn't get it done, he lets down the team and it's a matter of those guys getting it done. Guys with good arms that know how to pitch, but they can't pitch scared.
"You can teach them and coach them and talk to them, but a lot of times, you've just got to get through it."
Arkansas dropped to 1-6 in Game 2 in SEC play.
This won't be the last time Van Horn and Kentucky coach Joe Cohen hook up this season. Both will join Oral Roberts' Rob Walton as assistants this summer on the USA Baseball National Team. Baylor's Steve Smith will be the head coach.
In addition, it was Cohen who replaced Van Horn as head coach at Northwestern State in Natchitiches, La. Van Horn was there from 1995-97 and won two conference championships while Cohen also led the Demons to a pair of league titles in his four seasons. Both were named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year twice.
First SEC Start
Arkansas second baseman Ben Tschepikow, a freshman from Fayetteville, made the most of his first SEC start by going 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI in Saturday's opener.
Tschepikow, who replaced injured junior John Henry Marquardt, entered the game with one hit -- a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning of a 5-4 win against Vanderbilt on April 9 -- in his only at-bat of SEC play.
With more than an hour between games Saturday, Arkansas' players feasted on apples and bananas in their dugout instead of having a full-blown lunch.
"You don't want to eat too much ... That would weigh you down and we've still got another game to play," Boyce said.
Temperatures in the low-50s mixed with a frigid wind chill resulted in only 121 fans attending Saturday's opener. It was UK's lowest attendance in SEC games this season with 239 being the previous low in a 10-9 loss against Tennessee on April 10.
The lowest attendance for all games in Hagan Stadium was 101 for a 12-5 loss against Morehead State on March 9.
Despite being played in the middle of the afternoon, the lights at Hagan Stadium remained on for both games of Saturday's doubleheader because of overcast skies and a light fog that drifted through the field at times.
The sun finally broke through the clouds late in the ninth inning of Saturday's second game.
