Arkansas starter Charlie Isaacson dropped to 0-2 on the season despite going seven innings allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Long Beach starter Daniel Eisentrager improved to 3-0 after going six and one-third innings giving up five hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
The 49ers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Todd Jennings cranked a 370-foot home run over the left field fence to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead. It was the first home run Razorback pitching had surrendered this season.
After the first inning homer, Arkansas starter Charlie Isaacson settled down and held the 49ers at bay. Isaacson allowed just two hits through four innings, striking out four and working out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Long Beach State starter Daniel Eisentrager matched Isaacson pitch for pitch. Eisentrager gave up four hits through the first five innings and did not allow a Razorback to reach second base.
The 49ers scratched out another run in the bottom of the fifth when Jeremy Reed singled home Kevin Randle who was hit by a pitch. Randle advanced to second on the play as left fielder Kirk McConnell booted the ball. Arkansas catcher Aaron Graves then gunned down Randle on a steal attempt, then made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the inning.
Eisentrager continued to hold the Razorbacks off the scoreboard. Kirk McConnell was robbed of a triple in the top of the sixth when right fielder Nick Covarrubias stretched out to make the catch. Cliff Crouse just missed a home run as the ball sailed foul. Crouse went down swinging for Eisentrager's third strikeout of the game. Andrew Wishy then hit a hard line drive down the first base line that 49er Mike Hofius snared to end the inning.
The Hogs had their best scoring chance in the seventh. Michael Conner led off with a walk to give the Razorbacks their second leadoff hitter on base for the game. The walk was also the first issued by Eisentrager of the game. Nick Pitts then ripped a 1-2 pitch deep to right, but Covarrubias was able to make the catch at the base of the fence for the first out of the inning.
The Razorbacks finally chased Eisentrager when Clay Goodwin hit a hard single up the middle to move Conner to second with only one out in the inning. Josh Alliston relieved Eisentrager and faced Ryan Fox who pinch-hit for Graves.
Fox flied out to center for the second out of the inning, with Conner tagging up and advancing to third on the play. Brett Hagedorn pinch-hit for Luke Weatherford and flied out to center to end the scoring threat.
Arkansas threatened in the eighth when McConnell doubled down the right field line after Scott Bridges flied out. Cliff Crouse was then called out on a close play at first that moved McConnell to third. Andrew Wishy walked to give the Hogs runners on the corners with two down. The 49ers ended the scoring chance when Alliston caught Michael Conner looking on a 3-2 pitch to preserve the 2-0 lead.
Long Beach added to its lead with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Nick Orlandos led off with a solo home run for a 3-0 advantage. Orlandos took relief pitcher Scott Roehl's 3-0 offering deep for the second home run of the game. Chris Wright scored later in the inning on a single by Covarrubias for a 4-0 lead.
The Razorbacks and 49ers conclude the series with a 1 p.m. Central Time game on Sunday. ARSN goes on the air at 12:40 p.m.
