Wednesday, the Brookshire (Texas) Royal standout made it official almost.
Wilkins, after a talk with his father, has decided to become a Razorback, he said. He had yet to speak with UA assistant Chris Vaughn, who has recruited him, to inform Vaughn of his decision as of Wednesday night.
"I'm going to sign with Arkansas for sure," Wilkins said. "I tried Coach Vaughn once and I'll do so again before too long. But you can count me as committed."
Coaches can not call recruits during August, so Wilkins has to initiate contact with Vaughn.
He is the fifth commitment for the Razorbacks, and the first running back. Wilkins (5-11, 185, 4.4) also plays cornerback, but said his preference would be to play on offense in college.
"I just feel more comfortable playing running back," he said.
Razorback coaches did not assure Wilkins he could play running back at Arkansas, but Wilkins said he was confident he'd get a chance to play on offense.
Wilkins had a chance to get an extended up-close view of where he'll be playing next year, staying across the street from Reynolds Razorback Stadium with his brother, Ernest. Wilkins also has an uncle who lives in the area.
"That definitely was a part of it," Wilkins said. "I'm close to them."
As a junior, Wilkins rushed for 2,046 yards and 27 touchdowns. He said it was important to him to commit before the start of his senior season.
"I just wanted to get it out of the way," Wilkins said. "I didn't want to be worrying about it going into the season."
He was also recruited by UTEP, Utah, Colorado, Baylor and TCU, among others.
During his visit last week, Wilkins talked about the desire to play in the SEC.
"I like the SEC," Wilkins said then. "I want to play there because of the competition. I can really see myself playing in the SEC."
Brookshire Royal, located just outside Houston, was 13-1 last season, losing in the semifinals. The Falcons are once again expected to make a deep run in the 2A playoffs.
