The summer workouts are in full bloom now. I saw about every member of the two deep, including all the quarterbacks at the Broyles Center as Don Decker and his staff conducted the voluntary workouts Monday afternoon.
"We had a little break and it did them a lot of good," Decker said. "The attitudes of everyone is great. I think Coach Nutt knows exactly when to back off and when to push forward."
Caleb Miller looked good in his running workouts after minor surgery earlier this summer for a sports hernia. He's been cleared for all workouts, and will be in great shape for two-a-days in August.
All three quarterbacks are on campus and involved in pass scale drills as well as the summer voluntary workouts with Decker.
"The attitude of the team and the way we are working is awesome," said tight end Jason Peters. "I think what you see here today is a sign that we are going to have a good season."
Tony Bua said, "I think what the magazines are saying is just more motivation. I hear they say we are going to finish fifth or sixth in the West. We aren't thinking that way."
How much prime rib can Shawn Andrews consume?
Shawn Andrews told me Monday afternoon that he gained up to 365 at the Cotton Bowl this past winter. He is ashamed of that, and admitted that he did something really bad at the Lawry's Prime Rib Bowl, one of the bowl functions.
"The organizers of the prime rib bowl said we could eat as many prime ribs as we wanted," Andrews said. "But they stopped me."
Just out of curiosity, how many 14-ounce prime rib portions do you think Shawn ate before those at the event stopped him? (Answer later in this story.)
Hamlin participates in workouts
Free safety Ken Hamlin, suspended from the team for an alcohol-related offense, was working out with his teammates in the voluntary workouts. The summer workouts aren't considered part of team functions, although they are done under Decker's eyes. So, what Hamlin does is not an indicator on his status for next fall.
Jimmy Beasley happy at rover
Junior Jimmy Beasley is listed at the starter at rover heading into fall, but will get a push from Bo Mosley, recently moved from cornerback.
"That's fine," Beasley said. "I really don't pay attention to that stuff any more. I just take care of my business. I played behind Tony Bua my first year, and then behind Kenny Hamlin last year. I figure I'll just do what I can and not worry about it. I think that comes with age. You can't control what happens in some ways. You can only control how you prepare. I'm getting ready to help this team win some ball games, and I'll do it how ever I can."
Trivia Answer on Shawn Andrews' Diet
Shawn Andrews consumed eight prime rib steaks at a Cotton Bowl feast for the two teams. He would have kept going, but the operators of the eating establishment stopped him at eight.
