Hogs Start Game Preparation Early

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt isn't used to starting game preparations nearly three weeks out from the season opener.

But with Southern California looming to start this season, Nutt had to make special concessions.

Beginning Monday, the Razorbacks started putting in elements of the USC game plan, utilizing a scout team for the first time.

"I love keeping away from a scout team until school starts," Nutt said. "We thought we needed one more week.

"There's a few guys that get ... discouraged and disgruntled and scout team's a tough role especially if you've been here for a couple of years."

Nutt said he'd typically started scout work a week to 10 days before the season opener in the past and he didn't like putting in scout teams at least until school started.

"This has been the longest," Nutt said. "This has been the quickest we've ever started with that."

School starts Monday at Arkansas.

"We're trying to keep every advantage we have," Nutt said.

The coaching staff set to work on the game plan for the Sept. 2 opener as far back as the spring, Nutt said.

"Really it started in the spring and in the summer," he said. "It's been a pretty quick turnaround."
