UA's Depth Chart Has Few Surprises

FAYETTEVILLE — When he first arrived back on campus to start preparing for the season, Arkansas sophomore kicker Stephen Arnold took awhile to start feeling comfortable.

"Back home, you're comfortable at home, doing stuff your way on your time and you don't have any competition," Arnold said. "You get up here and the competition will mess with you a little bit.

"The intimidation, you're in front of a football team, it's tough."

But in the last several weeks, Arnold has felt more comfortable.

Thursday, he was rewarded when he was named the starting kicker for the Razorbacks' Sept. 2 opener against Southern California, edging out freshman walk-on Dan Bailey, when Arkansas coach Houston Nutt released the depth chart.

The kicking job was one of the few left to question with just more than a week remaining until the opener.

"It took awhile because Bailey really came out of left field," Nutt said. "We knew he had a good leg, we didn't know how consistent he'd be and how he'd handle pressure, but he did a good job all the way through camp."

Nutt said Arnold's consistency throughout the month helped lift him over Bailey.

"It's a great feeling inside," Arnold said. "Everybody wants to be a part of a team and now I have a chance to do something to help our team."

Arnold couldn't help but think about Bailey though.

"I feel terrible for him," Arnold said. "Dan's a tremendous competitor. I have the utmost respect for him."

Junior Nate Garner appears set to start on the offensive line, the only question is where.

Garner is listed as the co-starter at both right guard (with Robert Felton) and right tackle (with Zac Tubbs).

"He's been very valuable for us," Nutt said. "He's earned a starting role. I'm excited about Nate Garner."

Other positions on the depth chart where there are two starters listed are flanker, with Cedric Washington and Damian Williams, and right defensive end, with Anthony Brown and Antwain Robinson listed as starters.

The depth chart also has Peyton Hillis and Washington both listed equally as punt returners.
