Friday Practice Report, 8/16

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt didn't have good news on Friday. The Hogs lost two players for the season because of injuries.

Arkansas went through two solid practices Friday, but there was one notable absence. Cornerback Marvin Jackson, also the team's top punt returner, was sent for MRI tests after a knee swelled over night. The news later in the day wasn't good. Jackson sustained a torn ACL to his right knee. He will be lost for the season.

The Hogs also lost reserve defensive tackle Jayson Johnson for the season when it was learned Friday that the Little Rock native dislocated a shoulder during Thursday's afternoon workout.

"Marvin twisted it at the end of practice, and we didn't think it was a serious injury, but there is some pain and some swelling in the joint," Houston Nutt said. "We wanted to get it checked out. "

Matt Jones logged considerable time in team work at quarterback although he threw only a couple of passes in those sessions, instead executing the running game offense. He did make some nice catches at wide receiver throughout the morning. He was with the quarterbacks for the first part of the morning workout, and will spend the entire afternoon at quarterback.

Tarvaris Jackson threw the only interception in team drills, a deep ball picked off by freshman John Jackson over Sparky Hamilton. Carlos Ousley caught a touchdown bomb behind freshman safety Vickiel Vaughn. Vaughn stayed after practice to work on his steps with assistant coach Chris Vaughn.

"We had a good spirited workout," Nutt said of the morning drill. "I liked what I saw from guys like Keith Turner, James Johnson and Chase Pressley. Those guys have their motor running fast. Our defensive line is doing some good things."

Line coach Mike Markuson had praise for his first offensive line.

"We are picking up things well and off to a good start," he said. "Scott Davenport has had a good start at left guard. He looks good, and his feet are quick. He's matured and it looks like he's ready to play."

Decori Birmingham, who suffered cramps Thursday afternoon, did not dress out for the morning workout. J. Strain, another player who suffered cramps, was back at practice Friday with no apparent problems.

After the afternoon workout, Nutt said, "Matt Jones had a great day. He had a very good practice this morning and then followed it up with an excellent practice in the afternoon. I was glad to see that."

Concerning the loss of Jackson on the punt return team, Nutt said, "We've had George Wilson and Gerald Howard back there before and they will get a look there now."

Practices on Saturday will be at 9:15 a.m. and 3:55 p.m. There will be no workouts on Sunday, and two-a-days will resume on Monday.
