Thursday Grid Update, 9/19

Arkansas had to head indoors when heavy rains hit Northwest Arkansas. The Hogs worked for about 75 minutes in Walker Pavilion as Houston Nutt conducted the workout along with his graduate assistants to free assistant coaches to hit the recruiting trails.

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt and his graduate assistant coaches handled things in a brief, Thursday workout that included extra conditioning for the varsity and extra hitting for the younger players.

"We had a good, spirited workout," said Nutt, who then gave his squad Friday and Saturday off as the Hogs faced an open date this weekend.

"We'll come back and have a longer, harder Sunday practice," Nutt said. "We've gotten a lot of the Alabama stuff in. We are ready to buckle down to our specific Alabama preparations, like we would do on a Tuesday."

Nutt said he had gotten what he wanted out of the squad in the three practices this week. The Hogs worked on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And, he liked the effort on Thursday.

"Our coaches went on the road today to scout high school games," Nutt said. "But our players still came out today and gave us a good day's work. Our concentration is good. And, I thought the younger players looked good in our scrimmage time at the end of practice."

Nutt said his staff has looked at a lot of Alabama film this week, with no surprises.

"They are what I thought they would be, very good," Nutt said. "They've got a senior quarterback who can run the option and hurt you with play-action. They are very good on offense. They'll fake the run, and hit you deep.

"Defensively, they are very good. They are physical and very good up front. No one has been able to block them, and we know their personnel up front. Those guys ... like Kenny King and Kendal Morehead ... have been there forever. They are physical and good."

Nutt said the Hogs have not picked a punt returner for the Alabama game.

"Lawrence Richardson is still in the running," Nutt said. "So is Decori Birmingham, and we want to look at Cedric Washington some more. If we have to just fair catch it, if we just need someone to catch it to win a game, we know George Wilson can do that."

Because of rainy conditions, the Hogs worked inside Walker Pavilion on Thursday.
