Dick's Interceptions Bother Coach

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas coach Houston Nutt was clearly annoyed Wednesday morning after watching quarterback Casey Dick throw a pair of interceptions that would have been returned for touchdowns in a game.

On one of the interceptions, backup strongside linebacker Chip Gregory stepped in front of a Dick pass and streaked down the left sideline and into the end zone in the Walker Pavilion.

"We don't accept that. That's very disturbing," Nutt said of the interceptions. "Don't do that. You're under duress, you've got to throw the ball away. It's got to be to our guys or throw it away to grandmother, period."

Dick has thrown several ill-advised passes over the first two weeks of preseason practice, and he had another throw intercepted during Wednesday's morning practice by cornerback Jerell Norton.

"On one of (the interceptions), (Dick) thought he had thrown it out-of-bounds. That ain't good enough," Nutt said. "Throw it up, third row."

Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Nathan Dick -- Casey's younger brother -- continues to impress coaches with his ability to pick up the offense.

Nutt said the freshman has made the most progress of all the quarterbacks, and he's pushing sophomore Nathan Emert for the No. 2 job behind Casey Dick.

"He's moving. Let's leave it like that," Nutt said of Nathan Dick.

Early Christmas

Junior Elston Forte's move earlier this week from strong safety to weakside linebacker has turned out better than Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring could have imagined.

Forte has already played himself into the No. 2 spot behind starting weakside linebacker Ryan Powers.

"If there ever was a Christmas gift, early Christmas, it's been Elston Forte," Herring said.

Injury Update

Starting cornerback Matterral Richardson missed Wednesday's practice because of problems with his wisdom teeth. That allowed backup Jamar Love to work with the first-team defense.

Tight end D.J. Williams (concussion) returned to practice, and the freshman caught a long pass from Dick. Fellow tight end Ben Cleveland continued to miss practice because of a neck stinger.

Kicker Jeremy Davis sat out of practice for the third consecutive day because of a nerve problem with his foot. Nutt said he hopes the junior will back by Saturday when the Razorbacks will hold their second preseason scrimmage.

Offensive tackle Nate Garner (concussion) also sat out Wednesday.

Cover Boy

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden hasn't received a copy of the news Sports Illustrated with a picture of himself on the cover. As expected, though, he said it was an honor to grace the cover.

"To be on the front of SI is a great feeling," McFadden said. "There is not very many chances to get a chance to do something like that, so it's a great feeling."
