Source: Long To Be Introduced As Arkansas' AD

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas is on the verge of hiring its first new athletic director in 34 years. School officials are expected to hold a news conference Tuesday to announce that Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long has agreed to be Arkansas' new athletic director, a source told Hawgs Illustrated publisher Clay Henry on Monday afternoon.

A source within Arkansas' athletic department told The Morning News that a news conference is expected for sometime today, putting an end to the seven-month long search to find Frank Broyles' replacement.

"Jeff has to do what's best for his family and his career," Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday. "That's how I look at it."

Arkansas Chancellor John White has been heading the search to find a new athletic director since the 82-year-old Broyles announced Feb. 17 that he was retiring at the end of the year.

Broyles has served as Arkansas' athletic director since July 1, 1973, and he will likely work alongside Long, 48, until his final day on the job on Dec. 31.

White has tried over the past few months to keep his search for a new athletic director as quiet as possible, but Long was seen boarding a private plane registered to Arkansas on Friday morning.

Long and his wife, Fanny, flew from Pittsburgh to Fayetteville, where they were filmed by local TV station KHOG exiting the plane at Drake Field.

Arkansas Board of Trustees chairman Stanley Reed, who has assisted White in the search, said Friday evening that Long was "a strong candidate" to replace Broyles.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday that Long was offered the job and was expected to accept it.

"Everything that I've asked for, Jeff has jumped in and done everything he can to help, to make it happen," Wannstedt told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"As far as I'm concerned, my relationship with him was very good and will continue to be very good."

Long had been Pitt's athletic director since May 2003. During his tenure, he hired Wannstedt and unveiled a new Olympic sports weight room.

White said in late May that he wanted to hire a new athletic director by early October, so the individual could work closely with Broyles through the end of the year. Long appears to be White's choice.

Arkansas football coach Houston Nutt said Monday afternoon that he hasn't had much time to consider who the school's next athletic director might be, though he was curious.

"I've just been concentrating on things that I have to concentrate on and that's really football and the game (against) Alabama (on Saturday)," Nutt said.

"That's all I can do right now, and I hadn't really had much time to think about that."
